Sudanese army tightens control of Khartoum

Sudan’s paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has taken a step towards forming its own breakaway government.

Its symbolic move at a political event in Nairobi follows advances by the Sudanese Armed Forces into the heart of the capital Khartoum, having already regained the north of the city.

The army has near total control of the crucial state of Gezira, while the paramilitaries still control most of Darfur.

Meanwhile more than 200 unarmed civilians have been killed by the RSF over three days in villages towards the north of the White Nile state, where the military had no presence.

The UN has launched this year’s humanitarian and refugee response plans for Sudan, appealing for $6 billion to assist nearly 26 million people inside the country and across the region who are on the brink of famine.
