Hours after President Zelensky publicly acknowledged that the Ukrainian army was operating in the Belgorod region of Russia, he made another announcement: his soldiers had captured two Chinese citizens fighting “as part of the Russian army” in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
Zelensky said identity documents, bank cards and personal data were found in their possession.
Ukraine’s president said there were other Chinese soldiers in the Russian army, but it’s not clear if the two people captured were sent by China or signed up under their own steam.
Zelensky wrote on X that the development was “a clear signal that Putin is going to do anything but end the war” and called on the US and Europe to react.
Beijing has previously depicted itself as a neutral party despite accusations that it has supplied weapons to Russia and cut drone supplies to Ukraine.
Zelensky wants answers from China, but may not get them.
