Last night Israel approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon, starting a 60-day truce after 13 months of fighting.
The agreement hinges on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah forces relocate north of the Litani river.
Benjamin Netanyahu said a ceasefire with Hezbollah would allow Israel to focus on the threat from Iran and further isolate Hamas in Gaza. Since last October, some 60,000 Israelis and 1.2 million Lebanese have been displaced in the fighting.
Cross-border attacks intensified even as the deal was being finalised, with at least 24 people killed in strikes across Lebanon.
In Israel, some far-right ministers and residents of northern areas most impacted by the fighting described the deal as a “historic missed opportunity” to eliminate Hezbollah entirely.
The UN said yesterday that Lebanon was facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
