US rapper draws attention to Sudan’s civil war

The Sensemaker desk is – like most of the world – divided into those who know about Macklemore and those who know about Sudan. The two sides collided after the US rapper cancelled an October concert in Dubai because of the UAE’s role “in the ongoing genocide and humanitarian crisis” in Sudan. UN experts reported “credible” evidence in January that the UAE was arming the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group that has been fighting the Sudan Armed Forces for the past 500 days (the UAE denies it). More than 10 million people – one in five in Sudan – have fled their homes to escape the violence. More are now at risk after the Arbaat Dam collapsed near Port Sudan in heavy rains at the weekend, killing at least 30 people, according to a UN agency, with more than 50,000 people affected on the western side of the dam (the eastern side is still being assessed) and water supplies to the city at risk. All attention welcome.
