The most expensive primary ever for the US House of Representatives ended this week with the removal of congressman Jamaal Bowman of New York, a member of the so-called Squad of left-wing Democrats. The race was fought largely on the topic of Israel, which Bowman has accused of genocide. George Latimer, his challenger and a staunch Israel supporter, benefited from most of the $25 million spent. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee spent nearly $15 million supporting him. Democrats around the country – but especially Joe Biden – see the race as an indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the November general election. Biden has edged to the right on Israel-Gaza and immigration while trying to keep his left wing happy. The primary result won’t change the situation in Michigan, where Biden needs to win in November but faces a large pro-Palestine protest vote.
