At least 49 people have died after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Yemen earlier this week. Among them were 31 women and six children. Search and rescue operations are continuing for 140 people still missing, but they’re said to be hampered by a shortage of patrol boats. According to survivors, the boat left from Bosaso in Somalia and was carrying 115 Somali nationals and 145 Ethiopians. Migrants are increasingly fleeing countries in the Horn of Africa because of severe droughts and extreme weather events exacerbating political and economic instability. Despite the conflict in Yemen, thousands of migrants continue to cross it hoping to reach Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. In 2023, more than 97,200 migrants arrived in Yemen, up 33 per cent from the year before.
