Danish military tails Chinese ship after Baltic Sea cables severed

The Danish military said on Wednesday that it was tailing a Chinese cargo ship, after two fibre optic cables were severed in the Baltic Sea.

The Yi Peng 3 left the Russian port of Ust-Luga on 15 November and was in the area where the Swedish-Lithuanian and Finnish-German cables were cut on Sunday and Monday, according to reports.

Sweden and Finland are jointly investigating the incident as potential sabotage; Germany’s defence minister Boris Pistorius said “no one” believes the cables were cut accidentally.

European officials, while not accusing anyone directly, said Russia was operating hybrid attacks on Ukraine’s allies. Kajsa Ollongren, the former minister of defence of Netherlands, said on Wednesday: “We must remember that while we see this war in Ukraine, we ourselves are also attacked – not by missiles as yet but there is a hybrid warfare going on.”

Russia denies any involvement, while China said it requires its vessels to abide by relevant laws and regulations.
