China sees an opening in US-EU split

China is moving rapidly to strengthen ties with the EU following the German elections.

The People’s Republic is eager to develop bilateral ties with Germany and “support the EU’s strategic autonomy,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told the South China Morning Post.

That was shortly after Germany’s new chancellor-in-waiting, Fredrich Merz, said his “absolute priority” would be “to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA”.

China and the EU are planning a summit in May.

China's Xi Jinping clearly sees a geostrategic opening in Trump’s indifference to Europe, but he’s also sticking by its main aggressor.

State media said he also affirmed China’s "no limits" partnership with Russia in a call to Putin on Monday.
