Last September, Canada’s Justin Trudeau accused India’s government of being behind the murder of a Sikh activist who had called for the creation of an independent homeland in northern India. A year later Canada has gone further, saying the killing was part of a campaign of criminal activity against Indian dissidents in the country. Canada expelled India’s top diplomat and five others on Monday, saying they were part of the criminal network. India furiously denied the claims and expelled six Canadian diplomats. Canada is home to the largest Sikh community outside of India. It’s also a member of Nato and the Five Eyes intelligence group – alongside the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand – meaning some of these countries will be drawn into the dispute. Last year, Downing Street said it would not “get ahead” of Canada’s investigation. Yesterday, a spokesman said that Keir Starmer and Trudeau agreed on “the importance of the rule of law”.
