Costa Rica says it will receive a flight from the US later today carrying 200 migrants from central Asia and India.
Panama received three last week, with roughly 350 migrants from Afghanistan, Iran, China and other countries.
These migrants are heading to central America partly a result of US diplomatic pressure and in Panama’s case partly in response to Trump’s threats to seize the Panama canal.
Both countries have said they aim to return the migrants to their countries of origin (although it’s unclear how) through a repatriation process to be funded by the US under the supervision of UN Migration.
Meanwhile, the NYT reports deportees in Panama have been locked in a hotel for nearly a week while officials prepare a camp near the jungle, which breaches national laws that prohibit detention for more than 24 hours without a court order.
