UK chairs Ukraine Nato defence group for the first time as US pulls back

Next week the UK will take over leadership of the group tasked with enhancing Ukraine’s security within Nato from the US.

After 25 US-led meetings of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG), also known as Ramstein, the assembly of 50 national defence secretaries will be convened by UK defence secretary John Healey.

New Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth will also attend but the UK government has been told by Donald Trump that it should be leading Nato in Europe.

German defense minister Boris Pistorius has said the future of the UDCG long-term will depend on the US administration, which has already suspended its military aid to Ukraine after Trump’s election before resuming it soon after.

The 26th Ramstein meeting will take place two days before the Munich Security Conference, attended by Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg.

Kellogg has denied reports that a plan to end the war will be unveiled.
