Shell’s test case for Labour drilling ban

Shell’s CEO Wael Sawan says he’ll go to the UK’s Supreme court to appeal a judge’s decision to ban development of the Jackdaw gasfield in the North Sea.

Permissions granted to develop Jackdaw and Rosebank – a £3 billion field under development by Norway’s Equinor and UK’s Ithaca Energy – were ruled unlawful because of a separate ruling that carbon emissions must be considered in environmental impact assessments.

Shell has spent £800 million on the project to date and says the field could produce enough energy to heat 1.4 million UK homes.

Lord Ericht, the judge presiding, said that “Shell, Equinor and Ithaca knew or ought to have known at the time that the consents were granted that the law was uncertain”.

The Labour party pledged not to grant new exploration licences but also said it would not block existing developments.
