Russian spies causing “mayhem” on Europe’s streets

In the last two years close to 100 people have been arrested on suspicion of carrying out crimes on behalf of Russian intelligence, according to research for Tortoise’s Slow Newscast.

The GRU, Russia’s Main Intelligence directorate, has ramped up attacks in the last 18 months, causing what the head of MI5 called “sustained mayhem” on Europe’s streets.

Most are acts of vandalism or sabotage, including: a Ukrainian owned business in London set on fire by a group of men; a plot to assassinate Rheinmetall’s CEO Armin Papperger In Germany; secret cameras installed along Polish transport routes involved in delivering weapons to Ukraine; a warehouse fire in London; and a DHL storage unit fire caused by an explosive in Birmingham.

Authorities believe that the Birmingham bomb, along with a third warehouse fire in Germany, were both part of a Russian plot to detonate explosive packages on cargo flights to the US.
