Ukraine, Mexico and Canada send firefighters to California despite Trump’s threats

Mexico and Canada face high tariffs in a second Trump term, while Ukraine risks losing military aid.

In the transactional world of Donald Trump, all three countries may need to show they’re givers as well as takers to avoid suffering at the hands of the US. The Los Angeles fires offer one such opportunity.

Mexico and Canada have sent personnel to California, and Ukraine yesterday said it can provide at least 150 firefighters – a week after Donald Trump Jr singled out the LA fire department for donating surplus supplies to Kyiv in 2022.

But this foreign help shouldn’t be seen solely through the lens of Trump’s return. Mexico sent humanitarian aid to Haiti and a search and rescue team to Turkey after their earthquakes in 2021 and 2023 respectively.

A 30-year-old partnership exists between the Californian and Ukrainian national guards. Diplomacy can still transcend the politics of the moment.
