Ferocious winds continued to fan three LA-area wildfires last night, burning multimillion-dollar homes despite the efforts of thousands of firefighters and dozens of aircraft dropping water and fire retardant.
Five people are confirmed dead and more than 100,000 people are under compulsory evacuation orders, most of them from Pacific Palisades, where Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Jennifer Aniston were regular visitors to an understated but hugely affluent town centre – now largely destroyed.
Insurance claims to rebuild on charred plots overlooking the ocean could drive insurers out of the state and premiums up for homeowners who stay (the median house price in the Palisades is $3.3 million).
Two questions: is climate change rendering Hollywood and its dormitories unliveable? If so, where will the people who live and work there go?
