Ukraine claims to have mounted a significant new offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, apparently to strengthen its position in any ceasefire talks forced on it by the US.
Ukraine’s general staff said its forces had been involved in 42 separate engagements over the weekend in the pocket of Russian territory they took in a surprise attack last summer. Since then Russian troops with North Korean reinforcements have taken back about half of it.
Russia’s defence ministry acknowledged a new attack by two tanks and a dozen armoured vehicles but said it had been stopped.
The point of holding Russian territory is to use it as a “strong trump card” in any negotiations, Ukraine’s President Zelensky admits.
He and Putin have been busy flattering Donald Trump as the clock ticks down to his inauguration, after which he’s said he will stop the war in a day, without saying how.
