Hurricane Helene upends US voting

Joe Biden travelled to the Carolinas yesterday to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, which has now killed at least 166 people. The impacts are political too. With barely a month until the presidential election, local officials are concerned about the state of polling locations and whether displaced residents will be able to vote. One of North Carolina’s top election officers described a “daunting” level of uncertainty. To make matters worse, ballot printing has been delayed because of the need to remove RFK Jr’s name as a candidate. Trump has been quick to criticise the federal government’s emergency response. Latest polls put him 0.6 per cent ahead of Harris in what has become a battleground state. Voting in Georgia and Florida is also expected to be affected by the storm.
