Donald Trump has suggested to Volodymyr Zelensky that the US take over and run Ukraine’s nuclear power plants as part of a peace deal.
In a summary of an hour-long call between the two men – their first known contact since their disastrous Oval Office meeting last month – the US Secretary of State said Trump’s thinking was that American ownership of the plants would help protect them.
Marco Rubio said Trump also spoke of America’s “electricity and utility expertise,” as if Ukraine didn’t have plenty of both. (The Zaporizhiya nuclear plant is Europe’s largest and was built in the 1980s.)
Trump said on Truth Social the call was “very good” and was intended “to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs”.
Earlier, his envoy Steve Witkoff expressed confidence that a “complete ceasefire” would come “in a few weeks”, but on the first night after a long call between Trump and Putin at which they claimed to agree on a partial ceasefire, Russia attacked Ukraine with more than fifty drones and missiles.
