Finland recovers anchor at centre of Baltic cable sabotage investigation

The Swedish navy has recovered an anchor from the seabed of the Gulf of Finland.

It may get Finnish authorities closer to proving their suspicion that a Russian oil tanker, Eagle S, damaged the Estlink 2 electricity cable between Finland and Estonia by dragging its anchor.

In the wake of the Christmas Day incident, eight Eagle S crew members suspected of aggravated sabotage and telecommunications interference were given a travel ban preventing them from leaving their ship.

The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force has also launched an operation to monitor Russia’s shadow fleet of sanction-evading vessels.

Eagle S is thought to be one of them.
