It was one of the defining images of Tokyo 2020. Essex’s Beth Shriever, her legs full of lactic acid, being hoisted into the sky. She’d just won BMX gold for Great Britain by 0.09 seconds. The man lifting her was her teammate and childhood friend Kye Whyte, who had won a silver just minutes before. Shriever worked as a teaching assistant in the lead up to Tokyo and had to crowdfund her entry – UK Sport had cut off support for female riders following a poor showing in Rio. Shriever is tipped to win gold in Paris, which would be remarkable given she broke her collarbone a couple of months ago. Her qualification starts today. If Shriever and Whyte both make it to their finals, they could again find themselves racing for victory just minutes apart.
