The Premier League’s bottom three clubs are on course to break the record for the combined lowest points tally for relegated clubs in the league’s history.
Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton have together gained just 43 points in total after 26 matches.
All three clubs were promoted from the Championship last season and have struggled to keep pace in England’s top tier.
More worryingly, last season's total of 46 points, shared between Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United, was the second worst in history.
They too were newly promoted clubs and were subsequently relegated. In the 30 years since the Premier League became a 20-team league, the average combined points total for the bottom three at this stage of the season is 59.8.
Getting into the Premier League is one thing. Staying is another.
