You’d forgive Linda Thompson for having a sense of humour failure. Her albums with ex-husband Richard made her one of the most vaunted voices of the ‘70s, before she suddenly found herself silenced, indefinitely, by Spasmodic Dysphonia. So it’s a miracle of sorts that there’s a new album at all. And yet it takes a surprisingly light tone – like a children’s birthday party at Stonehenge. The preclusion of Linda’s voice necessitates a family affair, and a different musician friend (or relative) helms every track. Some mediums channel better than others, but John Grant (of The Czars) singing a song called John Grant about… John Grant is a multiverse of madness worthy of Father John Misty. Also wonderful is Those Damn Roches, a paean to the prickly bond of being a musical family, sung by her son Teddy. On Proxy Music, Linda dredges through the wreckage of living and, incredibly, finds precious mettle still.
