‘YIPPEE-KI-YAY’ by Kesha: the queen of recession pop returns

Bad news for Trump and his tariffs: Kesha is back.

The singer has lost the dollar sign in her name, but her new song is a full-throated return to the ‘recession pop’ of her early work.

Characterised by high-energy hedonism, the dance pop music made in the shadow of the 2008 financial crisis focused on living in the moment (think Lady Gaga’s ‘Just Dance’, LMFAO’s ‘Party Rock Anthem’ and Kesha’s own ‘TiK ToK’).

Last year’s brat summer hinted at a renaissance, while releases from Miley Cyrus and Gaga felt like canaries in the economic coalmine.

In ‘YIPPEE-KI-YAY’, which features a verse from fellow noughties icon T-Pain, Kesha rides into a trailer park in her brand new car like one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Economists hate to see her coming, but Kesha is promising a good time while the world burns.
