Music mimesis gives an old Doechii song several leases of life

If you want to understand the music ecosystem in 2025, a timeline of the song ‘Anxiety’ by the rapper Doechii would be a good place to start.

Born Jaylah Hickmon, Doechii’s rise from YouTube vlogs to the Grammy stage treads a now familiar path: go viral, get big.

The cornerstone of that ascension is ‘Anxiety’. In 2019 the rapper posted the track online in a YouTube video in which she sampled Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’.

In 2023 another rapper, Sleepy Hallow, released his song ‘A N X I E T Y’, which sampled Doechii’s lyrics. Hallow’s version went viral on TikTok, which led Doechii fans back to the original 2019 video and triggered a viral dance trend inspired by The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Now Doechii has officially released the single version of ‘Anxiety’, more than five years after she wrote it.
