The Sudanese army has recaptured Wad Madani, a strategic city in southeastern Sudan that had been held by paramilitary forces for over a year.
The city’s recapture could mark a turning point in a conflict now nearly two years old. It’s the latest in a series of wins for the Sudanese army, which recently took back control of areas around Khartoum and the eastern provinces.
The war has led to massacres, ethnic cleansing and famine. Last week, the Biden administration accused the paramilitary forces and its proxies of committing genocide. It also sanctioned the RSF’s leader, General Hamdan, as well as seven RSF-owned companies in the UAE, which is accused of trading gold and buying weapons on behalf of the group.
To date, 14 million Sudanese are displaced and 25 million are suffering from acute or chronic hunger.
