The Supreme Court ruled last week that a woman is defined in UK equality law as a biological female. Now comes the small matter of implementation.
British Transport Police were among the first to amend their guidelines, announcing that trans women arrested in circumstances requiring them to be strip searched would be searched by male officers.
But it’s unclear how officers will determine biological sex.
Kishwer Falkner, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, told the BBC the commission was working on a fresh code of practice on women’s spaces ready for the summer.
She suggested trans activists refocus efforts on asking for “third spaces” such as unisex toilets and changing rooms, indicating this won’t be a priority for the watchdog.
Thousands of people protested the court’s ruling in London this weekend.
