OpenAI put a powerful new image generator into the world this week, and with it the company birthed a new trend: images made in the style of Studio Ghibli, the fabled Japanese animation studio.
Sam Altman, the OpenAI CEO, got in on the action, changing his X profile picture to a Ghiblified version of himself.
The company has restrictions on prompts replicating “the style of individual living artists”, and there have been unconfirmed reports of requests for Ghibli versions of users’ own photos being blocked.
Studio Ghibli has yet to comment on the fad, but we know how one founder feels about it.
Hayao Miyazaki, director of Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, when shown examples of AI-generated animation in 2016, responded: “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”
