Box office receipts suggest it pays to make movies with women

There is no surefire way to make a Hollywood hit, but representation may help.

Five of the ten highest grossing films in 2024 had women in at least 50 per cent of key roles, according to an annual report from the LA gender equality coalition ReFrame.

The group ‘stamps’ films that have women or underrepresented genders in half of major positions from directors to writers, actors, composers and effects supervisors.

Only 30 of the top 100 highest grossing movies of the year were stamped, including Wicked and The Substance, but those that were earned nearly three times more than non-stamped movies – an average of $293 million vs $117 million.

This is despite stamped films having lower budgets on average than non-stamped films.

Netflix and Amazon made half the eligible pictures. Apple, Lionsgate and Paramount made none of them.
