Aldi has leapfrogged Asda in terms of grocery sales for the first time.
In the 12 weeks to 24 March, Kantar figures seen by the Telegraph show Aldi in the lead on eggs, fresh fish, fresh poultry, fresh beef, and fruit and veg sales.
It’s yet another gut-punch for Asda, whose grocery sales market share – which encompasses all food and non alcoholic drinks – has shrunk by 4.4 per cent since its TDR Capital takeover in 2021.
Aldi’s USP as the UK’s prime destination for cheap food is working, forcing other supermarkets to play catch-up with its ‘price-match’ offers.
Last Christmas was its best ever, and it’s planning 30 new store openings in Britain this year, including nine in London.
Aldi used to be seen as a plucky also-ran against the big four behemoths of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
But as prices remain stubbornly high, it’s got them running scared.
