Shutdown vote shows Dems still haven’t decided how to fight Trump

The US Democrats have woken up but their beef is with each other.

The Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, caused consternation on Friday when he helped his Republican opponents pass a funding bill to keep the government going.

Schumer’s argument was that a shutdown would accelerate Donald Trump’s skewering of government services by allowing him to decide which federal workers to bring back from furlough and which departments and agencies to reopen once the shutdown was over.

But Democrats young (AOC) and old (Nancy Pelosi) believe Schumer further enabled Trump and squandered rare leverage over a Republican party in control of every branch of government.

The bill cuts non-defence programmes, increases border security spending and imposes no Congressional guardrails on the president in his war against federal workers.

On Sunday a CNN poll put the Democratic Party’s favourability at 29 per cent, a historic low partly driven by their own voters.
