A civil war is threatening to derail Reform UK’s hopes of becoming a serious political player.
On Friday the party suspended one of their MPs, Rupert Lowe, citing allegations of physical and verbal threats that have been reported to the police.
Lowe denies the claims and says he is the victim of a “political assassination” for criticising Nigel Farage days earlier.
The truth is hard to pin down. Farage does have a habit of cutting down tall poppies who threaten his primacy, and Lowe has repeatedly strayed from the party line (most notably on Tommy Robinson).
But Farage allies claim Lowe’s attack on his leader was a pre-emptive strike, knowing the party was planning to oust him over the allegations, and Farage is attuned to British voters’ red lines.
See the coordinated response belatedly rejecting Trump’s depiction of Zelensky as a dictator. This fight may not end Farage’s hopes of becoming PM.
But it’s a reminder: nothing is guaranteed.
