Into the bearpit of the new world order steps a figure from the old one.
Mark Carney, who steered Canada’s economy through the 2008 financial crisis and Britain’s through Brexit, has replaced Justin Trudeau as Canadian prime minister.
A central banker and political novice, Carney won’t have the luxury of a grace period: Canada is in the middle of fighting a trade war with Trump, who has called for the country to become a 51st state.
This may yet prove helpful to Carney – and not just because trade is in his wheelhouse.
Trump’s threats (and perhaps also Trudeau’s departure) have eroded the 26-point lead the opposition Conservative party held six weeks ago, with Ipsos now putting Carney’s Liberal Party a notch ahead.
Carney must hold a federal election by October, but he might be best off calling it soon.
