Apple has filed a legal appeal contesting the UK government’s secret order to access encrypted data.
In January the Home Office requested a backdoor into Apple’s cloud storage systems, effectively breaking end-to-end protections, after which the tech firm said it could no longer offer its most secure level of encryption in the UK.
The government demand, which came in the form of a “technical capability notice” issued under the Investigatory Powers Act, has no known parallel in major democracies.
The UK government believes encryption helps terrorists and child sex abusers to evade detection, while digital security experts argue it offers essential protection against fraud and hacking.
The case may be heard imminently, but is likely to be held in secret.
