Taiwan semiconductor firm puts chips on table in deal with Trump

The world’s largest chipmaking company says it will invest $100 billion in chip fabrication plants in the US, as it tries to avoid the impact of Donald Trump’s tariffs.

TSMC’s chief executive said the company would build three US chip fabs in Arizona – in addition to one expected to start mass production this year and two more previously announced.

The Taiwanese firm controls more than 90 per cent of the market for making the most advanced chips.

Trump, who has threatened tariffs on chip imports, said building up the industry in the US was “a matter of economic and national security”.

The TSMC deal has been criticised by Taiwan’s opposition; the government there promises its most advanced semiconductor technologies will be staying put.
