Young people in the UK are going out less than a year ago, as the cost of living and nighttime transport rises and safety fears soar – particularly for women.
A survey by the Night Time Industries Association in January found 61 per cent of 18-30s are going out less over the past year.
26 per cent of women say they felt anxious or uneasy and a further 12 per cent felt fearful or unsafe.
Primary concerns are new forms of spiking – including in vapes and food – and a lack of street lighting, CCTV and police.
The nighttime economy was worth more than £2 billion in 2024.
It employs around three million people, although those numbers are falling.
Officially, street crime fell in 2024, but nine out of ten respondents told the NTIA they didn’t trust the government’s figures or its ability to fix the problem.
