Big brain raises money for “safe” AI

Ilya Sutskever, cofounder of OpenAI and the brain behind ChatGPT, has raised more than $1 billion for a new startup.

OpenAI’s former chief scientist left the company last May after a chaotic year and started Safe Superintelligence the following month.

Bloomberg says the venture capital firm Greenoaks Capital Partners plans to lead a new investment round with $500 million, but the potential returns remain unclear.

Sutskever says the company will focus on developing safe AI systems rather than generating revenue.

It doesn’t intend to sell products in the near future and “will be fully insulated from the outside pressures of having to deal with a large and complicated product and having to be stuck in a competitive rat race,” Sutskever said when it launched.

What “safe superintelligence” means remains to be seen.
