Hamas said it was delaying the release of hostages “until further notice” after accusing Israel of breaking the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Israel responded by calling the delay a violation and putting its military on the “highest alert”.
Hamas alleged that Israel had delayed the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza, opened fire across the Strip and prevented the entry of humanitarian aid over the course of the three-week ceasefire.
It didn’t mention Benjamin Netanyahu saying last week he would continue the fighting until Hamas was destroyed, nor Donald Trump saying yesterday that Palestinians wouldn’t be allowed to return to Gaza under his resettlement plan.
Neither statement is conducive to the three-stage ceasefire agreement running its full course.
For now, Hamas’s announcement seems intended as a warning shot. The next hostage-prisoner exchange is due to take place on Saturday.
