Government ministers have ousted the chair of the UK’s competition watchdog for failing to focus sufficiently on growth. Marcus Bokkerink will be replaced as chair of the CMA by Doug Gurr, director of the Natural History Museum and former head of Amazon UK.
A former CMA board member described Bokkerink’s resignation as “curious” given the chair’s limited oversight over day-to-day business and investigations.
Last week Sarah Cardell, CEO of the CMA, and other bosses from Ofcom, Ofwat, Ofgem and the Financial Reporting Council, met with Chancellor Rachel Reeves to deliver ideas for boosting growth.
It’s understood the submission from the CMA was considered underwhelming.
Bokkerink warned in a post on LinkedIn against competition authorities becoming “vulnerable to short term expediency or vested interests”.
