UK may restrict NDAs in employment rights overhaul

The UK government is considering banning employers from using NDAs to silence victims of sexual misconduct and harassment.

Labour ministers overseeing workers’ rights have said they will “look more closely” at how non-disclosure agreements could be banned under the Employment Rights Bill.

Last week the government also said it would implement legislation previously passed by the Tories that would ban NDAs being used in higher education to silence victims of bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct.

Zelda Perkins, who launched the Can’t Buy My Silence campaign after her former boss Harvey Weinstein tried to silence her with an NDA, said it would be “an enormously positive step” if Labour used the Employment Rights Bill to restrict NDAs.

If it did, the UK would fall in line with Ireland, Canada and the US.
