A suspended Labour MP has pleaded guilty to assault, raising the possibility of a potentially tricky by-election for the new government.
Mike Amesbury was suspended by the party in October after a video emerged of him hitting another man to the ground.
In a statement yesterday Amesbury said he had made a “serious mistake”, apologised to the victim, Paul Fellows, and said he wouldn’t comment further until after the case concludes.
But Reform, which came a distant second in July’s election with 7,662 votes to Labour’s 14,696, is pushing for Amesbury to resign and trigger a by-election.
This week a YouGov poll suggested Reform is in second place nationally, one percentage point behind Labour.
Amesbury’s seat of Runcorn and Helsby may become the first real test this parliament of where the public stands.
