Biden’s last-minute rush to further restrict AI chip exports has been criticised by Nvidia as an “overreaching” attempt to rig markets and stifle competition.
The outgoing administration introduced new guidelines on Monday that restrict “tier one” semiconductor sales to a small handful of US allies.
The idea is to keep advanced tech out of Russian and Chinese hands and leverage the US’s headstart in AI to get businesses around the world to comply with its standards.
But Nvidia, which gets over half its revenue from foreign customers, is accusing Biden of undermining US tech dominance “with a 200+ page regulatory morass, drafted in secret and without proper legislative review”.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, has been generally quiet on political matters, but a blog post released on Monday by the company heaped praise on Trump and appealed to him to drop the new rules.
