Kenya gripped by anti-abduction protests

Kenya has been gripped by protests over the past week as anger grows over a wave of alleged abductions by police and security forces.

Kenya’s human rights commission has reported 82 disappearances since July, when nationwide demonstrations forced William Ruto’s government to withdraw planned tax rises.

Rights groups have accused police of covering up protester deaths as “accidents” and abducting critics who posted AI-generated images of the president in a coffin.

Evidence seen by Reuters showed that police marked the death of 19-year-old Charles Owino, killed in July by a gunshot wound to the head, as a “road accident”.

Five abducted critics were released on Monday, including a cartoonist. At least 24 remain missing.
