A 35-day-old baby froze to death in Gaza on Monday, the eighth to have died from cold in the Strip in the past few weeks.
Other victims reported by Gaza’s health ministry include one-month-old twins who died a day apart, as well as three babies who died between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day in their tents in Al-Mawasi: an Israeli-designated “humanitarian zone” where Palestinians have been ordered to flee for safety.
About 90 per cent of Gaza’s population have been displaced during the war – many multiple times – leaving families without blankets, mattresses or warm clothing.
Rain storms have also destroyed tents, now considered a luxury in Gaza. UN officials navigating aid restrictions report having to prioritise the entry of food over shelter supplies.
While Israel denies blocking aid, UNRWA has said that just 76 aid trucks entered Gaza each day in December – less than a sixth of pre-war totals.
