Lucy Letby’s legal team said it is taking the “exceptional, but necessary” step to seek permission from the Court of Appeal to ask it to reconsider her previously refused appeals.
The 34-year-old former neonatal nurse is currently serving 15 whole-life terms for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of seven others. At a press conference yesterday, Letby’s new barrister, Mark McDonald, alleged the prosecution’s lead expert in the trial had “remarkably” now changed his mind about the cause of death for three of the babies.
According to McDonald, Dr Dewi Evans was “not a reliable expert” and the Court of Appeal “may have now been misled” when previously ruling on Letby’s applications against the convictions.
Two bids made earlier this year to the Court of Appeal by Letby’s previous legal team failed, largely on the basis Evans was unreliable as a witness. McDonald also said he will take Letby’s case to the Criminal Cases Review Commission this week to ask it to consider fresh evidence the defence team has obtained.
