Bankruptcy judge halts The Onion’s purchase of InfoWars

A US bankruptcy judge has rejected a bid by the satirical website, The Onion, for Alex Jones's InfoWars website.

Judge Christopher Lopez ruled that the InfoWars bankruptcy auction did not result in the best possible bids since they were submitted in secret.

The Onion said last month that it would acquire InfoWars and related assets, backed by the families of victims of the Sandy Hook shooting, who won a $1.4 billion defamation lawsuit against Jones in 2022.

The families were willing to forfeit a portion of their share of the award to rebuild the website and feature well-known internet humour writers and content creators.

The Onion has not given up. After the judgment was announced, Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion’s parent company, said he would “continue to seek a path towards purchasing InfoWars in the coming weeks”.
