Murdoch’s family take inspiration from Succession, a TV show inspired by them

Sometimes art imitates life – and very occasionally life imitates art right back. According to the NYT, that’s what happened in the family feud to control Rupert Murdoch’s media empire.

In 2023, Murdoch’s children began discussing the PR strategy for their father’s death, prompted by the episode of HBO drama Succession in which the patriarch of the family dies. That patriarch, Logan Roy, is thought to be based on Rupert Murdoch.

This surreal tidbit was revealed as a part of a decision filed on Saturday by a Nevada commissioner, who ruled that Rupert Murdoch could not alter his family’s trust to give full power over his empire to his son Lachlan.

Currently the trust divides control of the company equally among Murdoch’s four eldest children. Two of these children are less conservative than Lachlan.

For as long as the trust remains as it is, Fox News’s days as a right-wing soapbox may be numbered.
