Gregg Wallace apologises for ‘middle-class women’ comment over MasterChef claims

The former MasterChef host Gregg Wallace has apologised for an Instagram post on Sunday morning claiming that complaints about his inappropriate sexual behaviour came from “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age”.

Wallace faces allegations from 13 people involved in a range of programmes over the past 17 years. Hours after he posted his video, the presenter Kirstie Allsopp recalled lewd comments he’d made, while revelations surfaced of previous complaints to the BBC in 2012 and 2022.

MasterChef is one of the BBC’s biggest hits, sold to 200 territories with an audience of 300 million worldwide.

This is the latest in a string of scandals involving BBC staff – in January, bullying allegations hit Strictly Come Dancing, while newsreader Huw Edwards was given a six-month suspended sentence in September for making indecent images of children.

MasterChef’s production company, Banijay UK, launched an investigation into Wallace’s behaviour last week.
