House Republicans move to ban transgender colleague from women’s bathrooms

Sarah McBride made history on 5 November when she became the first openly transgender person elected to US Congress. But when McBride officially steps into the Capitol in January, a Republican-led measure may ban her from using the women’s bathrooms.

On Monday, Republican member Nancy Mace announced plans which would ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms and changing rooms. She told reporters the move was aimed at McBride.

In a statement on social media, McBride responded: “Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness.”

Senior Democrats said the GOP was “bullying” McBride and “worrying about the restrooms” is not an order of priority for Americans.
