The days of handing a stranger a paper parking ticket with some time left on it are nearly over, as pay and display machines become less common across the UK. Many are reliant on 3G mobile networks to function – but by the end of next year, 3G will be switched off as major mobile networks gradually phase it out to boost capacity for faster 4G and 5G signals. Operators of ticket machines – often local councils – face a choice: pay to upgrade the technology inside machines, or hand over responsibilities to parking app operators. Enter RingGo – the UK’s biggest parking app. RingGo charges councils to operate their parking zones. In return, cash-strapped councils spend less on physical cash collections. The firm processed record bookings last year, and its profits have soared, as have council parking revenues. RingGo now processes around a third of all local government parking payments.
