Blue Man Group was born in 1987, along with rave culture and Nirvana. Satirising vapid yuppies and the contemporary art scene, the performance company became a global franchise, was absorbed into Cirque du Soleil, and almost collapsed during Covid. This tour is a rebirth, although most of the show is the same as it’s ever been. The mockery of modern art and the pounding rhythms beaten out on oil drums and plastic pipes remain, with the modern addition of a few iPad and internet skits. It’s a period piece, not because the routines are unchanged but because the Blue Men are. They are curious; they are interested and excited; they do not speak; they prefer to explore. There is something exciting about remembering how we once thought the world was wonderful rather than set against us. The past can be refreshing.
